Helpful Tips for Online Counselling

Did you know that online counselling can be a great alternative to in-person counselling? People who live in rural Alberta, have transportation difficulties, are nervous, or have limited time in their busy schedule can receive support from the privacy of their home. Virtual counselling may be a great option if you have access to a safe and private space, a reliable device, and a good internet connection for logging into sessions.

Helpful tips to make your virtual counselling experience successful:

1) Make sure your technology is ready to go: Double-check that your device is charged. Check your email for your secure session link. Make sure your camera and microphone/speakers are working. You may also use headphones for your session to help with privacy and sound.

2) Set up your space: Decide where your session will occur. Your space will need to be quiet and private. Take a look and see what parts of your space will be captured by your video during your session - are you comfortable with your counsellor also seeing this? Make sure you have what you need to feel comfortable throughout your session. You may choose to have tissues, a glass of water, a journal and a pen for writing down any insights, and any other items that will help you feel prepared and at ease.

3) Plan for the unexpected: Technology can be tricky, and things happen! You and your counsellor will develop a plan so you know exactly what will happen and what to do if you get disconnected during your session.

4) Create time for a buffer: Counselling is hard work, and it's not uncommon to experience deep emotions and/or feel tired afterwards. Because of this, you may want to create some time for yourself after your session to reflect, journal, breathe, etc, before you carry on with your day.

Sit back, get comfy, and enjoy your session from the comfort and safety of your home! Call to see if virtual counselling is the right fit for you!
