Object Permanence

“The most important thing is, even when we’re apart … I’ll always be with you …” — A. A. Milne

Teaching object permanence to children can be challenging (and sometimes frustrating during drop-offs). Object permanence is about understanding that caregivers still exist, even when you can’t see them. Some games we naturally play are peek-a-boo and hide-and-go seek. Another fun game to help teach object permanence to children is the “string game”. The caregiver and the child go into separate rooms, while each holding an end of the string. You can tug on the string back and forth, and continue to move about the house.

During drop offs, let children know that you have your end of the “invisible string” and they have their end.
